ABSTRACT
The idea was to motivate the reflection around the activity of design and research. The flexibility to adopt diverse approaches, as well as its tendency towards what is useful, allows us to assume design research in a functional manner. The design object clearly represents the enormous changes that have taken place in our society in recent decades. To the material objects have been added immaterial objects as important and recognized scenarios in the practice of design. The difference between science and design is clear: the former has as its fundamental aim the generation of knowledge, with an explanatory and predictive function; the latter has as its reason of being its projective nature focused on the development of products with a practical function. Research applied to the exercise of design or to the construction of theory is indispensable.
