ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to express graphically the two main functions of design and one of its biggest commitments, taking the diachronic and synchronic dimensions of the design act. It refers concretely to spatial ability, linked to interpreting space, and to sensitivity for aesthetic arrangement of the visual elements, as well as to creativity, linked to lateral, divergent or inventive thinking, and willingness towards interdisciplinary and collaborative work. Besides the prior information required in any project, the designer, in their performance, starts from a particular theoretical, technical, and methodological knowledge, because of their education and experience. The purpose of various design approaches is to guide practice towards a specific user or to design according to very specific objectives. Thus about user-centred design, sensory design, inclusive designs, participatory design, ecological design, sustainable design and design on demand. Inclusive design is focused on the attention of the users who, due to their special conditions, are outside average range of the population.
