ABSTRACT
Chapter 5, ‘Monuments for urban lifestyle,’ sets out to discuss the ‘urban kit’ for a city, used to define a city based on the presence of defensive walls, aqueducts, thermae, theatre, amphitheatre, circus and the forum. Firstly, the problematic nature of commencing research based on such a building kit is discussed. However, as it can be a proxy indicating urbanism, the evidence for the different buildings in the civitates of the Iberian Peninsula is treated. In order to understand the relation between the presence of the building type and the size of the settlement, these parameters are related and studied. Thereafter, the presence of spectacle buildings within the civitates is compared to the juridical status so as to understand whether privileged communities had a higher rate of monumentalisation. Lastly, we turn again to the position within the network, to understand whether the well-connected cities used their position to monumentalise.
