ABSTRACT

One of the most important things that happens in the guided math group is the discussion. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics defines math talk as “the ways of representing, thinking, talking, and agreeing and disagreeing that teachers and students use to engage in mathematical tasks”. It is so important to ask good questions. The questions should reach beyond the answer. Teacher's questions should pique curiosity. They should lead students into further explorations. It is crucial that the teacher sets up a discussion where students ask each other questions. Teacher questions as well as student-to-student questions should provide insight into student thinking. Students should understand the questions being asked. The language should be accessible, and everyone should have a way to enter into the conversation. When thinking about instruction with English language learners, teachers must consider the type of language support they will need.
