ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book starts with a brief history of development to the emergence of Sustainable Development. It examines the growing legitimacy of the post-development argument for alternatives to development. The chapter continues with a critical conceptual analysis of Buen Vivir, to better understand the concept and work towards a practical way forward. It examines Buen Vivir’s Indigenous origins, but affirmed that, as a plural concept, and one “under construction,” the way that it is understood in the literature is as culmination of community, politics, and academia. The book discusses how cooperation is vital to implementing Buen Vivir at the local level, because if communities could do it by themselves, it would already have been achieved.
