ABSTRACT

The most pertinent challenge to Buen Vivir is creating a solid, coherent understanding of what it entails. The transition towards a post-extractive society is therefore necessary, as Buen Vivir can only be achieved in the absence of large-scale extractivism. Not only do communities in Cotacachi have a strong affiliation with the idea of Buen Vivir, but they also have direct experience with extractivism. Extractivism and its impacts are freely discussed in Cotacachi, from television and radio programs to everyday conversations on the street. The local communities are still very active in their opposition against extractivism. The Ecuadorian government’s neoextractivist position in relation to Buen Vivir is contradictory to the aims of Buen Vivir; nonetheless, the former Correa government stated that the continuation of extractive activities is necessary for national fiscal revenue in the fight for poverty reduction.
