ABSTRACT

This chapter is a compilation of published and unpublished papers from 2014, 2015, and 2016 that lay out my most complete understanding of neoliberalism as a government and business partnership. I describe neoliberalism’s perverse effects on different large-group segments of the population, showing as well how some individuals in those groups make psychic sense of the large-group pressures to conform, and, in doing so, can tend unconsciously to reproduce the conditions that cause psychic pain. I draw as well on the social defenses literature to show how neoliberal policies and practices create sadomasochistic group and institutional normative unconscious enactments.
