ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the criminal justice system widely construed: criminal law, criminal activity, the police and tools of policing, the courts and judges, prisons, punishment, rehabilitation, and justice. It focuses on sex crimes, and presents a wide range of other criminal and potentially criminal activity: abuse of office, perjury and suborning perjury, soliciting a bribe, extortion, blackmail, criminal impersonation, slander. The chapter presents a situation in which criminal law is highly problematic, informed by questionable values and purposes, difficult to enforce, indiscriminate, and disproportionate in its effects. The most obvious criminal activity in the play involves those who contravene the laws against fornication, either directly or as part of a conspiracy or who attempt to do so.
