ABSTRACT

Anxiety is often a precursor to depression. Nowadays, as many as 5.5% of children aged 5–15 are diagnosed with anxiety disorders and 8.1% of 11–15 year olds with an emotional disorder. Girls often experience lower levels of wellbeing than boys. Bullying and cyberbullying are on a rise, especially in the secondary schools, which contributes to lower levels of students’ wellbeing. This is why governments around the world started to prioritise wellbeing education at all levels. While their initiative is welcomed, school professionals are not experts in wellbeing, therefore find it challenging to adhere to the Department of Education’s policies. Teachers and school leaders need more knowledge that will help them make an informed decision about the best wellbeing intervention they can introduce in their schools, and this book will help them do it. In this chapter, we will review how to create an optimal school environment to enhance the school community’s wellbeing.
