ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 introduces the topic of race, sexuality, and masculinity in gay men’s pornography. It opens with the author’s observations about the sexualization of Black masculinity in popular culture. It argues for the importance of understanding the relationship between race, sexuality, and masculinity in the context of agency implied by user submission (versus corporate submission) in gay men’s pornography. It also provides a short overview of the book. Lastly, it briefly reviews of a postmodern social constructionist perspective of sociological race, gender, and sexuality, integrating Critical Race Theory, DuBois’ “double-consciousness,” Bonilla-Silva’s “racialized social systems,” West and Zimmerman’s “doing gender,” Connell’s types of masculinity, and Jagose’s introduction to queer theory.
