ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the rise of notions of tolerance within European thought, underscoring how incessant religious violence prompted people to begin thinking about whether anyone should be able to impose the Truth on another human being. Among other thinkers considered are Theodore Beza (1519–1605), Jean Bodin (1530–1590), Sebastian Castellio (1515–1563), Michel de l’Hôpital (1507–1573), and Michael Servetus (ca. 1509–1553).
