ABSTRACT
This chapter traces one intellectual effect of nineteenth-century mass urbanization: the rise and development of the nineteenth-century novel. It traces the shift from romanticism to realism and pays particular attention the work of Stendhal (1783–1842), Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850), and Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880).
