ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the history of the Renaissance into northern Europe and highlights not only what united northern and southern culture but also what distinguished each from the other. It ends by noting how important northern Renaissance culture was to the rise of the Reformation. Among other thinkers considered are Sebastian Brant (1457–1521), Desiderius Erasmus (1466–1536), Martin Luther (1483–1546), and Thomas More (1478–1535).
