Conflicting Functions and Processes in Education: What Makes the System Work?

This chapter reviews the five primary functions of education—socialization; transmission of culture; social control and personal development; selection, training, and placement of individuals; and change and innovation—and the importance of processes in educational systems. Then, to illustrate their dynamic nature and relationship with the school’s environment, the authors discuss conflicts and controversies surrounding each function and provide real-life examples.
