ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the identity of the entrepreneurs. The enclave entrepreneurs felt that the manifold negative perceptions of the enclave held in Korean society were unfair and that their own contributions to Korean society were not properly recognized. They undertook various activities aimed at changing these discriminatory perceptions and supporting the enclave. From these activities, we can see various identities held by the entrepreneurs – they were entrepreneurs, Korean Chinese, Chinese, and Korean compatriots. The entrepreneurs’ reaction to the various gazes focused on the enclave created this multifaceted character. But the various roles they were asked to perform simultaneously by the states and mainstream societies of both South Korea and China maintained this diverse identity. It was this complexity that formed the identity of the enclave entrepreneurs.
