ABSTRACT

While my introspective self-reflections and past experiences as a fifth-grade teacher inspired my motivation toward learning more about the principal, an exploration of the literature showed that there was a dearth of information relating to the specific scenario I was facing. As I sought to learn more about a problem I was facing in my teaching, this review of the literature shows that the study I have conducted addressed a question that no other research has asked. The information presented was used to guide the creation of the study’s design, analysis, and implications. This chapter provides a thorough review of the literature in four main areas: (1) Critical Race Theory: a lens for exploring education and more, (2) benefits of expanding multicultural understandings, (3) research implementing multicultural understandings, and (4) the role of educational leadership in promoting multicultural understandings. The literature presented here provides key insights that reappear when discussing the results of the research study I conducted, as shared in Chapter Four.
