ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out the background and rationale for the study and provides an overview of the study design and the methods used. Chapter 4 provided important background for the study, setting out the linguistic landscape and the particularities associated with learning English and learning English in Hong Kong. With this backdrop, this chapter outlines the rationale for the research study that is the focus of this volume and details the methods that were adopted to examine teacher and student aspects of language learning motivation, critically considering these methods in the context of wider methodological trends in the field.
