ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the key tasks and techniques associated with technical development. Technical development represents the point in the product planning process at which the concept transitions from a vetted idea to a tangible product or service. A product protocol would be constructed for a particular product or service concept after it has been selected for continued development. A product protocol identifies the points of agreement between all departments and senior management on the product specifications and deliverables. An approach for quantifying the Kano model has been presented by Stein and Iansiti. Product use testing is used to evaluate a product's functional performance and examine the product protocol characteristics. The engineering department of the organization plays a predominant role during technical development due to the need for technology identification and application. A prevalent theme guiding the engineering function is design for excellence.
