ABSTRACT

The entire African continent, though divided into individual countries, has always had a mutuality of interests, culture and philosophies that can provide a perspective of unity. This idea of unity can be equal to that of any other continent in our world, including Europe. The connectedness of countries within the African continent can be thought of as unified in a historic and life-affirming manner. I emphasize this because there can be a tendency, part of our historical, educational and psychological conditioning, to divide Africa into parts. This was the European colonization of Africa. This came centuries later in the 17th century. Prior to this division, countries on the African continent had geographical differences due to climate, land usage and activities based on the qualities of the land on which the people resided. However, this did not exclude the commonality of cultural traits that belonged to all African people, throughout the continent.
