ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 introduces the research methodology and data of this study. A three-dimensional analytical framework based on Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis is used, which consists of: a textual analysis of the translation approaches in the core texts and methods of culture reconstruction in paratexts; an analysis of the reception of the translated Sun Tzu in Western discourse; and a social-cultural analysis of factors that influenced the translation and reception of Sun Tzu. This study takes a mixed method of both qualitative and quantitative analysis. For qualitative analysis, case study and example analysis are employed. The quantitative analysis is conducted with the assistance of three self-built corpora. Relevant facts including data source, data collection and the analytical tools in this study are also introduced.
