ABSTRACT
This chapter summarizes the major findings of the book, outlines its limitations and suggests implications for future research. Our findings have revealed that effective translation measures contributed to the popular reception of Sun Tzu in Western discourse. With the combined efforts of the core texts and paratexts, ancient Chinese strategic culture was effectively re-established, and The Art of War eventually became re-canonized in Western strategic culture. Translations of the military classic led to an innovation in Western strategic thinking and had a huge impact on the way a war is fought. The findings from this study make several contributions to the current literature: it has revealed the importance of paratexts in reconstructing culture; it has been methodologically innovative with a corpus-assisted approach to the study of translation and its reception; it has established a comprehensive analytical framework for textual, discourse and social-cultural analysis of classic translations; and it showcases the profound impact of classic translation in the cross-cultural exchange.
