ABSTRACT

Within the realms of sport and physical activity, gender has traditionally been articulated through the limiting binary positions of masculinity and femininity and rigidly applied to biological markers of sex difference. Examinations of gender presentation have expanded considerably in this discursive climate toward more local and situated discussions of practice that illustrate broader presentations of gender. Skateboarding is a culture in which interviews with professional skateboarders are a common form of popular cultural text. For the most high-profile skateboarders, there are often multiple interviews in existence, many of which cover similar or related issues. It is possible to build up a robust understanding of a particular perspective through reading across different interview sources. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
