ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how the symbolic language introduced in chapters 2 and 3 is used to capture the form of English sentences. There is extensive treatment of the challenges associated with formalizing English conditionals. Causal, contractual, and material conditionals are introduced and compared with the conditional connective of sentential logic. The paradoxes of material implication are discussed. Later sections discuss strong and weak disjunction and provide extensive analysis of how to apply techniques of formalization to discover hidden premises and facilitate the understanding and criticism of philosophical texts.
