ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the creation of a digital presence as primarily about making decisions rather than being a technical project. A website is the central owned asset in people's digital presence. It is created on top of a web-hosting account and is found and identified by a domain name. A content management system makes developing a web-site increasingly simple and, more or less, automatically incorporates capabilities such as letting users share people's content and adding interactive features. Global businesses and brands register their names with multiple global and country domains. The best starting point to buying people's first domain name is to use a domain search tool where people can identify the availability of different domains and their annual fees. Different top-level domains will have different costs. Avoid free offers or suspiciously low fees for domain names.
