ABSTRACT
The only variation that was possible was the choice of changing the colour of the text – and in some cases, this involved twisting a physical knob on the side of the screen. Despite the attention to design that informed the earliest graphical user interfaces, there was a period when this sentiment was briefly lost. The consciously designed GUIs of the 1980s gave way to the “wild west” of the World Wide Web. The web’s original intention was to enable scientists to use the internet to share technical information. Evidence of the confusion and poor experience that this can create is found through the Wayback Machine, which has been capturing snapshots of websites since the 1990s. A key advantage of using a content management system for people's website in combination with selected social media channels in people's digital presence is that the logical separation is managed for people and is largely invisible.
