ABSTRACT

With the advent of technologies such as the Internet and the World Wide Web, criminals, like everyone else, have migrated to the new virtual territories that cyberspace has opened up to them, affording them many new opportunities to perpetrate their misdeeds and to remain undetected by the authorities, hiding behind the screen, especially on the Dark Net. The online world has also enhanced the fear factor that the organized criminal groups utilize, since online threats are nowhere, yet everywhere. This chapter looks at the migration of organized crime to the online world, where profits are higher; chances of getting caught lower; and activities such as gambling, stock fraud, mortgage fraud, and many others can be carried out with keystrokes rather than bullets. Today, the criminals hire webmasters, hackers, and web designers to help them manage their affairs rather than hired guns.
