ABSTRACT

The world of organized crime is a far-reaching one today. Examining it as pseudo-culture is one way in which it can be deconstructed. In this final chapter, we will present a quick overview of the main aspects of a cultural approach to the study of organized crime. We will then conclude with reflections on the future of organized crime. The approach taken in this book has focused on the importance of culture in the formation and perpetuation of organized crime – both its own system of organization and its relation to mainstream cultures. In the framework, an interdisciplinary approach is key, tying together various theoretical strands from various disciplines, from criminology to anthropology. Crime is essentially about meaning, or its absence, as has been discussed throughout this book.
