ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an example of a new low-carbon zone in the Xiongan area, located in north China. A low-carbon community refers to a community that achieves zero carbon emissions through ecological greening and other measures in addition to minimizing carbon emissions from all activities. The construction of a low-carbon community is an important pathway to realizing carbon emissions mitigation in the context of rapid urbanization. Low-carbon community evaluation mainly focuses on building, community environment, community lifestyle, and other aspects. As Fraker suggests, there are many lessons to be learned from low-carbon communities towards achieving sustainable neighborhoods. The conventional method of establishing a low-carbon community is through renewable energy utilization, resource recycling, green traffic planning, land-use comprehensive means such as compact, low-carbon building design, and to reduce emissions. With the aim of establishing Xiongan as a new model for urban planning, the government intends to create a center with sustainable innovation and financing and a high-tech industry.
