ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the general impacts and methods used in China, the components within urban design, and how they presently guide China towards urban sustainability through sustainable urban design. It provides an example of a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM)-certified community project of Qinglong Mountain International Eco-city, in Nanjing, China. Urban design policy is concerned with more than just the architectural quality of development. It is also strongly focused on shaping a place as a whole while considering all its economic, social, and environmental impacts. Sustainable Urban Design (SUD) can significantly influence the economic, environmental, social, and cultural outcomes of a place. SUD can influence the economic success and socio-economic composition of a locality. BREEAM-communities can help stakeholders recognize and influence development projects according to the environmental, social, and economic needs of their local societies. In China, the first-ever BREEAM-communities certificate was issued to Qinglong Mountain International Eco-city.
