ABSTRACT

The Jews of France then were invited to assimilate as equal participants into French civilisation, which, needless to say, was considered the most advanced at that time. The syllogistic implication of equality for the Jews as men does not compel equal treatment and unblemished integration for them. The French model was the ultimate in aspiration, where the fruits of European culture had been distributed through the progressive revolutionary doctrine, as modified by successive legislation. French Jewish history in modern times has been marked and determined by three great events — the Revolution, the Dreyfus trial and the Nazi occupation and deportations. The Jews in France from North Africa have, by virtue of their situation, been aware of three groupings, however, shaded and modified — African Muslim, French Christian and Jewish.
