ABSTRACT

The conclusion reiterates the thesis of the book that the expansionist role played by piaohao in transforming market, trade, and finance in the age of capitalism and imperialism gives an affirmative answer to the long-ignored question on whether the Chinese hinterland could promote and support capitalist developments. The conclusion also revisits the main arguments of each chapter. Moreover, it analyzes how the universalist singular capitalist narrative continued to exert its influence in the realm of popular culture as of today and concludes that the neoliberalist reading and writing of economic and business histories will not help countries to a long-term solution to their ongoing economic and financial predicaments.
