ABSTRACT

This chapter examines what’s involved in understanding and negotiating the process of personal change by describing a number of stages to go through. Significant emotional change usually occurs when reader have deep conviction in their new outlook; so don’t become discouraged when reader feelings appear not to budge in the early stages of the change process. Between desiring change and achieving it, there are a number of stages to pass through. These stages provide structure to the change process and markers for assessing progress; for example, not taking responsibility for reader problems is likely to keep reader stranded in Stage 1. Doubt and uncertainty are the usual concomitants of change and therefore require acceptance of their presence rather than arousing fear of what reader think they portend. However, uncertainty is actually neutral with regard to outcome’.
