ABSTRACT

The emergency department is represented using a new proposed extended Petri net model, namely resource preservation net. This resource preservation net is then validated and proven to be sound mathematically through a few theorems and lemmas. The model development is made using Arena simulation software from Rockwell Automation. The Arena simulation tool is used to build the model. Model data inputs are collected from site observations. Model design can immediately begin through the use of a computer program, once enough information about the system has been gathered. Arena, a simulation modeling software, is a powerful graphical simulation offering analysis modules that can be combined with graphical templates in order to build huge and wide models. System redesign is one approach that aims to improve the operation of a business process. Petri net was proven to be one of the efficient approaches used in order to optimize business processes and, specifically, healthcare systems.
