ABSTRACT

Hospital emergency departments (ED) are large, complex communities with different business environments and operational constraints. The simulation model designed to depict the real-life system of the ED is verified and validated using the hospital’s databases, interviews conducted with patients, staff, and management, along with surveys and observations. Six sigma is a problem-solving method and quality improvement project that provides businesses in general and healthcare in particular with the suitable tools to improve the performance of a product or service. Decision-makers and experts consider that introducing technology into the healthcare industry, such as electronic health records, computerized information technologies, and telemonitoring can transform the industry. The OptQuest tool of Arena is used again in order to find the best and optimal solution for the problems faced by the studied ED during catastrophic events, where the system number out is maximized regardless of any other factor and considered as the main objective.
