ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the book’s themes on political agency, political subjectivity, citizenship, belonging, residency, and morality. It reviews Pierre Bourdieu’s contemporary practice theory, and Engin Isin’s approach to ‘enacting’ citizenship. Practice theory focusses on norms and practices for social reproduction; Isin’s approach on the acts, enactments, and actors who make claims for rights. These literatures are reviewed as a framework for the book’s examination of political agency among British migrants (EU citizens) in Spain and France. The chapter then dwells briefly on EU citizenship and accounts for field methods.
