ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the sentimental economies created by the Brexit debate and interrogates British migrants’ attitudes towards the binary positions (remain and leave) created by politicians. The migrants are grouped into Remainers and Leavers and examined in terms of the fundamental values upheld; opinions expressed; whether they coalesced in a coherent manner; and how those who positioned themselves at either pole learnt to live among one another. The chapter examines, in particular, Britons in Alicantine Spain, then compares their responses with those from migrants in France. The material of this chapter thus acts as a foregrounding for our examination, in the following chapter, of the pro-Remain migrants’ organised campaigning.
