ABSTRACT

The absence of traditional editing techniques or simple camera tricks makes it harder for a storyteller to indicate what is important about a scene. The uneasy feeling is mutual for both the content producer and the viewer. In The VR Book: Human-Centered Design, author Jason Jerald defines the field of view (FoV) as the angular measure of what can be seen at a single point in time. Perhaps the most important takeaway from the author's research on FoV is that humans can quickly recognize text within a 30 degree angle in both horizontal and vertical axis. Orientation points serve as spatial markers, enabling the viewer to situate oneself in the virtual space. In Virtual Reality documentaries where intertitles are an integral part of the narrative, using three orientation points works best, especially if the viewers are watching in a sitting position. Web fonts are specifically designed for the screen and are optimized for screen viewing.
