ABSTRACT

This chapter explains why the American two-party system has been mainly a one-party system for African Americans; the collapse of the New Deal coalition; the role of Blacks in the democratization of the Democratic Party presidential nominating process; and the role of race in the contemporary polarization of the American party system. It also presents a detailed case study of the nomination and election of the first African American president.
