ABSTRACT
This chapter defines and explains concepts central to the study of African American politics—freedom, power, racism, and the ideology of white supremacy. It then shows how the founders of the United States used power, racism, and white supremacy to write a constitution that fundamentally compromised the idea of universal freedom proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence.
