ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the basic functions or political parties, cleavages they help define them, and various “party families” in Europe. It discusses phenomena such as dealignment and party system volatility, which point to changes in European party-systems, including the rise of xenophobic, nationalist parties. It briefly reviews recent election in results in Italy, Greece, Poland, and Spain to illustrate more general points and claims.
