ABSTRACT

Semitau is a small settlement on the left shore of the Ka poewas, inhabited by Malay and Chinese. The environs of Semitau consist of low hilly ground, with smooth, gentle slopes, showing only occasionally sharper defined mountain ridges such as the Mount Djoewaran. The hills in the neighbourhood of Semitau are the remnants of a deeply eroded mountain chain, consisting of a system of highly folded strata the trend of the strata being on an average W.-E. with a steep dip to the south, sometimes they stand absolutely vertical. Poelau Madjang can be reached from Semitau by steamboat in 4 or 5 hours, and Semitau was therefore a capital starting-point for any operations in the Batang Loepar lands. The natural position of Semitau makes it so to speak, the gate of the higher districts on the Kapoewas.
