ABSTRACT

Religion plays a key role in many examples of feminist SF, whether as a force of misogynistic oppression, or in explorations of alternative, female-centered forms of religious practice. Religious ideas and practices may also be incorporated in alternative constructions of gender and sexuality. In addition to addressing female-positive SF speculation, this chapter addresses questions that arise when texts step beyond traditional gender roles and forms of intergender relationship. What social systems might emerge when binary heteronormativity is, in fact, not normative, or when gender itself is fluid and shifting? What perspectives do the speculations of SF offer on teachings of existing religious traditions about sexuality, and vice versa?
