ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces various groups of scholars who have worked with predatory publications, including editors and editorial boards who manage evaluations, authors who contribute content, reviewers who safeguard the quality of manuscripts, and readers who use and cite publications. It argues that every party has engaged in distorted practices, either as innocent victims or voluntary contributors, and therefore has contributed to the proliferation of scientifically disputed material in predatory journals. The chapter strives to piece together existing studies that use direct and indirect evidence to help understand different groups’ reasons for getting involved in predatory publishing.
