ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the characteristics of predatory conferences and resources to assist researchers in identifying such activities. It describes how predatory conferences have become a lucrative business for predators to expand their revenue, how the business has changed the behavior of many academics and professionals in scientific pursuits, and how individual efforts have been made to expose the misconduct of predatory conferences. The chapter describes concerns about the participation and support of major pharmaceutical companies that use predatory events as regular venues to communicate their research results. Additionally, this chapter describes efforts to counter unethical and destructive scholarly conferences, and provides tips to avoid predatory conferences.
