ABSTRACT

The overarching learning target is used when introducing a new concept or skill that is encompassed in a standard or set of related standards. Moss and Brookhart describe daily learning targets as theories of action that connect the essential content to effective instruction and subsequently meaningful learning. Learning targets are meant to support and be used with the formative assessment process; often times this means modifying or rewriting learning targets and/or lesson plans. Even when it causes more work, strategically responding to student data in a timely manner separates those who chose to simply cover their content vs those who teach with a focus on student learning.
