ABSTRACT

Instructional standards are a great resource to ensure universally rigorous and concise grade-to-grade learning expectations, if educators take the time to familiarize themselves with them through an unpacking process. Learning targets can help teachers align their instructions to their intended instructional outcomes and the extent to which a school clearly articulates and monitors curriculum ensures its alignment to any high-stake is the number one predictor of student achievement. A school or classroom leader who is either implementing learning targets for the first time, or just trying to establish more consistency across the entire building or a single classroom, needs to be sure to provide clear expectations to their staff and/or students while also providing them with the appropriate supports to reach and hopefully exceed expectations. Many teachers incorporate checks for understanding or small formative assessments throughout their lessons.
