ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to discusses "Cut the Fluff" by condensing and/or reorganizing the chosen standard to make it easier to mentally digest. Many standards involve students demonstrating multiple ways to achieve an objective, or the approach they need to master may be multifaceted. Standards are inherently designed to dictate student outcomes; it is then the teacher’s role to design lesson plans in order to facilitate the progress toward and eventual proficiency/mastery of these outcomes. Sometimes the standards can be easily dissected and the what and how are clearly indicated; other times the standards can be clouded with ambiguity. The important aspect from this step in the process is to pull everything to a student-first frame of mind.
