ABSTRACT

Standard reconstruction is a culminating step that allows the educators to bring all their previous work together in order to rephrase, simplify, and clarify a standard in student-friendly language. The completion of this step highlights many advantages of the unpacking process. In addition to aiding those who will be working directly with the standard as part of their curriculum, it also allows the standard to be conveyed in a manner that can be more easily understood by students, parents, and other teachers that may not share the same content, but are trying to incorporate cross curricular tasks/activities. The biology standard provides a good example of a Standard Reconstruction with a multitude of possible reconstructions. Generally the reconstruction process leaves room for subjectivity with the use of transitional words, placement of the “How” and the “What”, and/or punctuation.
