ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the concepts and definitions of risk and uncertainty broadly and then within the context of higher education. In particular, the chapter examines various types of risks faculty must face in teaching as well as the risks students face in learning. A working definition of risky teaching is offered and the idea of productive uncertainty is explained as a way of understanding what kinds of risk are appropriate in the teaching and learning context. The chapter concludes with a specific example of a course re-design to explore these concepts in practice.
