ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the disrupted state of our world and how, specifically, these disruptions have impacted higher education. Three key drivers of disruption in the sector are explored: economic, technological, and demographic. In addition, the global pandemic and the racial injustices of the summer of 2020 are discussed. The notion of wicked problems is introduced as a way to describe the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary challenges in society. A specific example of how students and faculty can engage with wicked problems is explored to highlight how uncertainty and risk taking can be used in response to the disruption.
